Mirante de São Jorge

Architecture is born from the need to establish a relationship between people and the world around them. Before being a shelter, it is a way of making a place.
On a hilltop facing the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, residents and visitors have gathered for generations to watch the sun set behind the mountains. Rather than creating a new destination, the project gives form to this ritual, adding a restaurant and bar that invite people to stay longer.
The pavilion occupies an existing clearing and touches the land as little as possible. Raised on slender piles, it preserves the topography, the native Cerrado and the natural drainage of the site. Existing trees pass through the structure.
The architecture is a continuous circular ribbon, eight metres wide and fifty-seven metres in diameter, enclosing a large central void. The circle does not stand as an object in the landscape, but defines a place of encounter and contemplation. In the open courtyard, the sky becomes the roof, and the movement of the sun marks the passage of time.
Preserving a landscape depends on protecting its ecosystems, but also on building cultural and emotional bonds between people and place. More than an ecotourism facility, the Mirante is architecture as a way of bringing people closer to the territory.
